Bloom in June

Ireland’s answer to the Chelsea Flower Show comes back to Dublin’s Phoenix Park this Bank Holiday weekend. Whether you know your azaleas from your amaryllises or not, the festival offers something to suit all tastes. The aesthete in us all no doubt likes to be surrounded by beautiful things, and at least these flowers won’t skip you in the queue for Bucks.

Bloom

Bloom

It is a family festival – but Bloom Inn will be serving up handcrafted beers and spirits to the thirstier of us, and the seafood bar is top on our list of spots to dine in what hopefully will be a gloriously sunny weekend.

If you’re in the business of seeing flowers and plants, Bloom 2014 will showcase 30 exquisite show gardens, from the very best of Ireland’s landscape gardeners and designers. Amongst the large, medium, small and concept gardens will be a vast assortment of design styles. Visitors to Bloom will also see what can be achieved with a limited budget and gardens which reflect some of the new trends impacting garden design today, such as the new approach to horticulture, ecology and sustainability in garden design. For the second year, Bloom will host a number of Postcard Gardens designed and constructed by passionate amateur gardeners from all around the country. These provide an opportunity for garden clubs and societies to demonstrate their abilities and to inspire other non-professional gardeners to experience the joys and benefits of gardening.

A team of expert judges from the world of horticulture will once again preside over this year’s event, including Andrew Wilson (award-winning garden designer, lecturer and writer), Mark Gregory (winner of 55 Chelsea medals), Karen Foley (landscape architect and educator) and Paul Maher (curator of the National Botanic Gardens). They will be joined by guest judge, award-winning landscape architect and garden designer Feargus McGarvey.

The Weekend Style Stage at Bloom will feature three fashion show features daily for the five days of the show.Hosted by style guru Bairbre Power, Fashion Editor of the Irish Independent, the Style Stage will feature top models from 1st Option model agency and special guests including contributors from Weekend magazine styled for a ‘catwalk’ appearance at Bloom.

Themed Floral and Botanical, there will be everything from outfits for glam summer wedding and holiday essentials to clothes to pull weeds in! Held on the main entertainment stage at Bloom Head to Hoe will dazzle and delight!

If, on the other hand you’re after a nice outdoor location to have a few tipples and catch up with friends, grab your Zirtek and book a ticket – we are tipping this as the first of many summer socials.
